A common stat that I often refer to is this, “only 4% of our Millennial Generation attends a church.” (published by Mike Breen of 3DM). Here are some further numbers that really hit home for me and my family. This is one reason that I’m excited to be a pastor at Mercy Road soon.
The Unchurched. According to a 2010 Barna Group study, 28% of the adult U.S. population has not attended a church activity of any kind in the past six months (that jumps to 43% if those under age 18 are included). Another study indicated that 51% of the U.S. population claim no religious affiliation (46% in Wisconsin). The Barna study further indicated that of the “unchurched” 61% claim to be Christian and 18% further claim to be “born again” but only 15% indicated that their religious life was important to them. Of that same unchurched group, 53% indicated a former Protestant or Catholic affiliation and 37% indicated they left due to a negative past experience.
How do we penetrate that prior-churched or unchurched segment of our communities? What does that unchurched person need to see in me and hear from me? Am I even available to that person in a way that will build friendships and change their life eternally?
What is God saying to you? What are you going to do about it?
